Why this matters in Mangalore
The monsoon here is not a rainy season in the way most of the country means it. From June to September this coast takes some of the heaviest rainfall in India, and there are stretches of a fortnight where going out for anything optional is simply not done.
Four months of that, every year, is enough to end a walking habit permanently rather than pause it. People in their seventies who stop for a monsoon often do not restart in October.
A session that happens in the house on set days is unaffected by any of it. The rain becomes weather rather than a reason.
Waiting for people who are always coming back next year
This coast has sent its working generation to the Gulf and to Mumbai for as long as anyone can remember. It is so ordinary that a household of two parents on their own is not remarked upon, and in many streets it is most of the houses.
What is particular here is the shape of it. Gulf work is never framed as permanent. There is always a plan to come back, in two years, after this contract, once the youngest finishes school, and the plan is sincere every time it is made. So the parents are not grieving a departure. They are waiting, sometimes for twenty years, and a life spent waiting is not the same as a life being lived.
A commitment three times a week, with people who understand the arrangement because they are in it too, is something happening now rather than something pending.
Why families in Mangalore choose it
The monsoon stops counting
June to September is when routines on this coast end for good. Indoors, the same days and slots carry straight through.
Kannada, Tulu, Konkani or English
Households here run in several languages at once, and facilitators lead in whichever the participant is most at ease with.
Set up from the Gulf
Children in Dubai, Doha or Muscat can register on a parents behalf and choose a slot that fits the day here rather than there.
A group in the same position
Most participants have family working abroad. That shared circumstance makes the conversation start faster than it otherwise would.
How Vayofit actually runs
The schedule is fixed and the group is small, which is what turns it into a habit rather than a one-off class.

Do sessions run during the monsoon?

Can the sessions be conducted in Kannada or Konkani?
Facilitators lead in Kannada, English and Hindi, and participants from this region commonly use Tulu and Konkani at home. Tell us the preference at registration.
I work in the Gulf. How do I arrange this for my parents?
Register on their behalf and pick a time slot that suits their day here. Our team helps them join the first session, and each one is recorded so a missed class is easy to catch up on.
